History of long beach

  • Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose, the world’s largest airplane, took off for the first and last time over Long Beach Harbor.

  • Long Beach was the site for yachting, volleyball, fencing, and archery for the Los Angeles Olympics.

  • First named Wilmore CIty in 1888, the original residents changed it to Long Beach due to its long, wide beaches.
